Did you know that we make about 35,000 choices a day and most of them are instinctive? Most of the decisions we make in our lives including our decisions about what we eat to the way we dress to what to do when we get home from work aren't at all conscious. The ability to make decisions is among the 10 essential life skills that are outlined by WHO and the primary focus in this piece.

What is Decision-Making?

It is the process of taking into consideration various choices to take an action. The decision-maker weighs the advantages and disadvantages, considers the problem from different perspectives and seeks out advice, conducts studies, analyzes information, and finally decides to take a decision that will lead to the desired result. What are the reasons to develop decision-making skills in Children?

In a recent survey that we conducted, we asked parents - what life skills would they like to impart to their children. Some of the responses we received were - swimming, riding bicycles or tying shoelaces. These aren't life abilities. They can be classified as physical or technical skills, but not life abilities. Simply because one can get by in life without these abilities.

Making decisions is an essential skill we need to develop in children early in the course of their lives.

I'm certain you'll be with me when I say that making decisions is an essential part of every day life. It's an essential skill to live a fulfilling life. There's no way to be 100% sure to take a decision. I wish there was! We'll make mistakes, and falter. They will do the same for their children. But can we be taught from our mistakes? That is the important question.

For the following reasons, it is crucial for children to have the ability to take their own decisions as early as possible in the course of their lives:

Children are the Leaders of Tomorrow

The children we are raising today will become tomorrow's leaders. They will be running the world twenty years from now. Taking this long-term view, we as educators and parents should be able to teach good decision-making skills to our kids to make them comfortable, kind and confident.

The ability to build relationships is achievable through the process of decision making

As they get older, children choose their friends and decide who they'd like to be able to communicate with. Persons who are genuine and willing to help and support them will make good decision-makers. While we can't predict the behavior of people or their availability in good and bad times however, it is still possible to be a part of this group. However, awareness and mindfulness can improve one's intuition and help to make good sense.

With patience, overcome difficult situations

Based on their previous decisions, experienced decision-makers can be confident in their own abilities. This will help them make decisions with a sense of resiliency even in difficult and challenging situations.

Helps Children Become Better Decision Makers

Today's children have more confidence and possess their own opinions. A child can express his preferences and dislikes as early as six months. At two or three, they are fairly clear on certain choices including what they like to consume, wear and so on. These are the initial steps towards establishing their independence and individuality. If we as parents are able to help them think through some of these decisions, and respect their choices without regard to our personal prejudices this will help the child become confident in their decision-making.

This is Dr. Ikeda's keen insight. Children should be treated as individuals by adults. Children who are allowed to make decisions earlier throughout their lives gradually become confident with this ability as they advance in their lives. By the time they reach the point at which they have to make a choice about their career then they might be able make informed choices. They'll be able to make educated decisions as they enter their professional lives and assume the roles of lawyers, teachers or managers as well as political leaders.
